For the third instalment of our ‘Design R-evolution’ column, we wanted to remember an object that has left an indelible mark on the history of design and is certainly one of its most recognisable symbols.
La Lounge Chair
Charles Eames (1907-1978) and his wife Ray Eames (1912-1988) were a celebrated pair of American designers and architects who played a significant role in the promotion and development of modern design in the United States during the 20th century. They are particularly known for their work in the field of furniture design, thanks to their innovative approach, use of modern materials and their sophisticated combination of functionality, aesthetics and comfort.
The Lounge Chair was created in 1956 as part of a project for furniture manufacturer Herman Miller. The basic concept was to create a luxury chair that offered superior comfort and at the same time was aesthetically appealing.
“Why not make a modern version of the old English club chair?” With this inspiration, Charles Eames began to develop the Lounge Chair during a creative process that lasted many years.
The aim was precisely to fulfil the desire for a generously proportioned armchair that combined absolute comfort with the best quality of materials and workmanship.
The result was the Lounge Chair characterised by a frame made of curved plywood, which gives the chair its organic shape, a stainless steel base and high-quality leather upholstery.
This perfect combination of shapes and materials gives the armchair its organic and sophisticated look.

For a good 60 years, the chair has been produced exclusively by Vitra for the European market and by Herman Miller throughout the rest of the world.
In fact, the production of this iconic chair still requires as many as 47 working steps, mostly manual, which are carried out with extreme precision.
This dedication to craftsmanship, combined with the use of the highest quality materials, gives the Lounge an enduring excellence.
