The advent of artificial intelligence (AI) is shaking the foundations of our relationship with foreign languages. Indeed, some argue that AI will render the need to master different languages obsolete, making it more crucial than ever to explore the exciting implications of this perspective.
Supporters of AI’s victory over human linguistic knowledge speak of the AI replacing the human brain, and to some extent, this observation is based on a kernel of truth.
For example, instant translation devices can allow people speaking different languages to communicate seamlessly, such as when a tourist in Japan uses a translation app to ask for directions from a local resident without knowing the Japanese language. Furthermore, it could be envisaged that more and more companies might decide to use automatic translation software to reduce the need to hire (and pay!) professional translators for certain international communication activities.
Viewed from this perspective, the situation for translators and interpreters could indeed appear tragic: in a world increasingly dominated by AI, the relevance of competence in foreign languages may seem to be in decline. AI-powered automatic translations are becoming increasingly precise and immediate, reducing the dependence on personal language skills. Additionally, AI-enhanced voice assistants and translation apps allow for instant overcoming of language barriers, seemingly making the need to learn a foreign language superfluous.
However, despite these advancements, knowledge of foreign languages remains an invaluable skill for multiple reasons. It goes beyond simply translating words and phrases; it also encompasses a deep understanding of the culture, history, and linguistic nuances of a specific community. This kind of knowledge is vital for creating meaningful connections and avoiding cultural misunderstandings. It is for this very reason that -for example- a business executive who fluently speaks several languages and can successfully negotiate business agreements in different countries without relying solely on automatic translations, remains an indispensable figure in a company that wants to make its partners feel valued.
As much as the ability to translate any given word is an extraordinary characteristic of artificial intelligence, a good translator (or anyone who speaks languages) can certainly add that extra touch of human warmth that certain types of conversations, even commercial ones, require. The nuances of meaning are sometimes imperceptible, and certainly a human being can understand, behind the words, the tone of voice or the non-verbal cues of the person sitting across from them, better than any robotic intelligence.
Furthermore, learning a new language can have a profound impact on the human brain. Scientific studies have shown that it can improve cognitive abilities, enhance memory, stimulate creative thinking, and even mitigate the effects of brain aging.
Therefore, beyond the effort that may be required in learning a language, especially if one is already beyond school age, the benefits go well beyond the mere ability to communicate and can significantly contribute to an individual’s overall well-being. On the other hand, as mentioned earlier, AI itself is not immune to limitations and challenges. Despite the increasing sophistication of automatic translations, interpretation errors and lack of context commonly occur in AI-generated translations. This can lead to misunderstandings and ineffective communication, especially in complex or technical contexts. Therefore, knowledge of foreign languages remains fundamental to ensure accurate and error-free communication.
Finally, proficiency in foreign languages can be crucial both professionally and personally. Many careers require mastery of multiple languages, and this competence can be crucial for obtaining high-level positions or conducting business internationally. Furthermore, the ability to speak multiple languages can greatly enrich travel experiences and promote intercultural understanding.
So, despite the advancement of AI in the field of foreign languages, linguistic knowledge remains an indispensable skill. While AI can simplify translation and communication, a deep understanding of foreign languages offers benefits that go well beyond mere word translation.
